Overview
Benog Tibba — Mussoorie's Forest Hill
Benog Tibba at 7,500 ft is a short, accessible hike just outside Mussoorie in the Benog Wildlife Sanctuary — one of Uttarakhand's most underrated nature escapes. The trail climbs through old-growth oak and rhododendron forest, managed as a protected bird sanctuary since 1988, to a flat hilltop ridge with panoramic views across the Doon Valley and the first ranks of the Garhwal Himalaya. A small temple to Maa Benog Devi sits at the summit, and the sanctuary is a recognised birding hotspot with over 200 recorded species.
The Benog Wildlife Sanctuary
The sanctuary covers 342 hectares of mixed temperate forest — mainly banj oak (Quercus leucotrichophora), Himalayan rhododendron (brilliant red in March-April), horse chestnut, and deodar. The forest is one of the few remaining patches of intact ridge forest above Mussoorie and supports leopard, barking deer, Himalayan goral, and over 200 bird species including the Khalij pheasant, Himalayan monal (state bird of Uttarakhand), and various thrush and warbler species. The early morning walk on Day 2 is the best window for birdwatching.
Summit views
The Benog ridge offers a wide arc of Himalayan views from the summit: Bandarpunch (20,720 ft) and Swargarohini to the north, the Gangotri group to the northeast, and a long sweep of the Doon Valley below to the south. The view is clearest October through February, before the April haze.
Who it's for
Families with children above 6, first-time trekkers, senior trekkers, and birders. No altitude risk, no technical terrain, 5 km each way on a clear forest path. Ideal as a first Himalayan taste or a weekend detox from Delhi.

What trekkers say
"I'd never camped in snow before. The HeyHikers team made me feel safe every single step. The summit sunrise — standing at 12,500 ft watching peaks turn gold — I cried. Not from the cold. From the beauty."

"Seven lakes, each more unreal than the last. The logistics were flawless — the food at 13,000 ft was better than most restaurants I know. Our guide Farooq knew every stone on the trail. Doing Goechala with them next."

How to Reach
Mussoorie is 35 km from Dehradun by road (1 hour). From Delhi, take the Shatabdi Express or overnight Jan Shatabdi to Dehradun (5-6 hours), then a shared taxi or cab to Mussoorie. Or take a direct Volvo overnight bus from ISBT Kashmere Gate (6-7 hours).
The Benog Tibba trailhead is at the Mussoorie–Benog Tibba sanctuary gate, about 5 km west of the Mussoorie bus stand (Rs 200 by auto or Rs 150 shared taxi from the library chowk). Entry to the sanctuary requires a small permit (₹100 for Indians, ₹500 for foreigners) payable at the gate — we handle this.
Safety & Security
- Acclimatize properly — never skip rest days at altitude.
- Drink at least 4 litres of water per day above 9,000 ft.
- Tell your trek leader immediately if you feel headache, nausea, or breathlessness — early AMS signs are treatable, ignored ones are not.
- Stay close to the group; do not take shortcuts off the marked trail.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking for the entire duration of the trek.
- Keep a buffer day for travel — Himalayan roads can close without notice.
- Carry travel insurance that explicitly covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation.
