Overview
Chirbatiya Weekend Trek — Garhwal From the Doorstep
Chirbatiya is a perfect two-day escape for city-based trekkers who want a genuine high-altitude Himalayan experience within striking distance of Rishikesh. The trek takes its name from the chir pine (Pinus roxburghii) — called chirbatiya in Garhwali — that dominates the lower forest and fills the trail with the scent of resin. The climb carries you 8,500 ft above Rishikesh to open meadows at 11,000 ft, where views stretch across the Garhwal foothills to the Bandarpunch range in the distance.
The forest experience
The climb from the trailhead passes through three distinct forest zones: chir pine at the base, transitioning to banj oak and rhododendron in the middle section, and opening into alpine grassland at the upper meadow. In spring (March-April) the rhododendron bloom is spectacular — entire hillsides flush red and pink. The forest section is dense enough that you're in shade for most of the climb, which makes the emergence onto the open meadow a genuine moment of drama.
Who it's for
A great first high-altitude trek for trekkers in reasonable fitness. The 9 km ascent is sustained but not extreme — manageable in 5-6 hours with breaks. City trekkers who can climb a 10-floor staircase without breathlessness will handle Chirbatiya. Ideal for groups from Delhi/NCR who want to use a weekend rather than take leave.

What trekkers say
"I'd never camped in snow before. The HeyHikers team made me feel safe every single step. The summit sunrise — standing at 12,500 ft watching peaks turn gold — I cried. Not from the cold. From the beauty."

"Seven lakes, each more unreal than the last. The logistics were flawless — the food at 13,000 ft was better than most restaurants I know. Our guide Farooq knew every stone on the trail. Doing Goechala with them next."

How to Reach
Rishikesh is the base. Reach by train (Jan Shatabdi from Delhi Sarai Rohilla reaches Haridwar in 4.5 hours, then cab to Rishikesh — 30 min) or overnight Volvo bus from ISBT Kashmere Gate (~7 hours). Our team meets at a designated point in Rishikesh and drives 3 hours to the trailhead — road conditions vary by season.
Safety & Security
- Acclimatize properly — never skip rest days at altitude.
- Drink at least 4 litres of water per day above 9,000 ft.
- Tell your trek leader immediately if you feel headache, nausea, or breathlessness — early AMS signs are treatable, ignored ones are not.
- Stay close to the group; do not take shortcuts off the marked trail.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking for the entire duration of the trek.
- Keep a buffer day for travel — Himalayan roads can close without notice.
- Carry travel insurance that explicitly covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation.
