Overview
Miyar Valley — Lahaul's Wildest Expedition
The Miyar Valley trek is one of the most remote and demanding wilderness expeditions available in Himachal Pradesh — a 12-day penetration deep into the Miyar Nala, a long glacier-carved valley in the Lahaul district flanked by some of the most dramatic rock walls in India. The valley runs north-south for 45 km, framed on both sides by 6,000 m walls — Menthosa (21,143 ft), Thamsar (17,060 ft), and dozens of unnamed peaks that have never been climbed. This is a trek for experienced mountaineers and explorers who want absolute wilderness and will not find it anywhere else in India.
The valley and its character
Miyar Nala drains into the Chenab (Chandrabhaga) River at Udaipur, a small market town in Lahaul. Unlike the tourist-trampled Spiti Valley or the pilgrimage-serviced Pin Valley, the Miyar Nala has no tourist infrastructure beyond Khanjar village — no tea houses, no cell service, no fixed campsites. The team carries everything. The upper valley above Urgos is uninhabited and genuinely wild: the only human presence is the occasional shepherd with a yak herd. The Miyar glacier at the valley head is a working glacier with crevasse zones, seracs, and ice walls — crampons and glacier rope techniques are used on Days 7-8.
Who should do this trek
Only trekkers with prior high-altitude experience (at least one 14,000+ ft trek), good physical fitness, and a tolerance for remote conditions. This is not a comfort trek — the approach drive is 5-6 hours on Lahaul roads, the camping is exposed, and days on glacier terrain require focus. HeyHikers requires all Miyar Valley participants to submit a prior trekking portfolio before confirmation.
Technical requirements
Crampons, ice axe (provided), glacier rope, and fixed-rope technique training (conducted at base on Day 5 rest day). No prior glacier experience required but strong physical fitness is non-negotiable. This is a difficult grade trek.

What trekkers say
"I'd never camped in snow before. The HeyHikers team made me feel safe every single step. The summit sunrise — standing at 12,500 ft watching peaks turn gold — I cried. Not from the cold. From the beauty."

"Seven lakes, each more unreal than the last. The logistics were flawless — the food at 13,000 ft was better than most restaurants I know. Our guide Farooq knew every stone on the trail. Doing Goechala with them next."

Safety & Security
- Acclimatize properly — never skip rest days at altitude.
- Drink at least 4 litres of water per day above 9,000 ft.
- Tell your trek leader immediately if you feel headache, nausea, or breathlessness — early AMS signs are treatable, ignored ones are not.
- Stay close to the group; do not take shortcuts off the marked trail.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking for the entire duration of the trek.
- Keep a buffer day for travel — Himalayan roads can close without notice.
- Carry travel insurance that explicitly covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation.
