Overview
Ranthan Kharak — Nanda Devi's Hidden Meadow
Ranthan Kharak is one of the best-kept secrets in the Garhwal Himalayas — a remote high-altitude plateau at 14,100 ft in Chamoli district, set inside the outer buffer zone of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. The trek approaches from Lohajung, the same basecamp used for the Roopkund and Kuari Pass treks, but branches off onto an almost entirely deserted trail through the Didna village heartland and into a high meadow system with some of the most unobstructed views of Nanda Devi (25,646 ft) accessible on a standard 6-day trek.
Why so few trekkers?
Ranthan Kharak is not in the main trekking company catalogues and lacks the name recognition of Roopkund or Kuari Pass. The trail from Didna is a working shepherd route — no fixed camps, no tea stalls, no signboards. HeyHikers has operated this route since 2021 with local Didna guides who know the meadow system intimately. The result is a trek that feels genuinely exploratory even in peak season.
Views from the plateau
The Ranthan Kharak plateau at 14,100 ft offers a direct north-facing window onto the Nanda Devi Sanctuary cirque. Nanda Devi (25,646 ft) — India's second-highest peak and the highest entirely within Indian territory — fills the northeastern horizon. Trishul (23,360 ft), Maiktoli (22,320 ft), and the Panchachuli range (Kumaon) extend the panorama east. The view rivals Roopkund in scale without the crowds.
Difficulty
Graded moderate. The challenge is the Day 3 sustained climb from Didna to Tolpani Bugyal (3,600 ft gain) and the Day 4 push to the plateau — a total of 4,600 ft over two days. No technical terrain but the altitude and sustained gradient demand good fitness. Trekkers who have completed Kedarkantha or Kuari Pass will manage comfortably.

What trekkers say
"I'd never camped in snow before. The HeyHikers team made me feel safe every single step. The summit sunrise — standing at 12,500 ft watching peaks turn gold — I cried. Not from the cold. From the beauty."

Kedarkantha, Dec 2025
"Seven lakes, each more unreal than the last. The logistics were flawless — the food at 13,000 ft was better than most restaurants I know. Our guide Farooq knew every stone on the trail. Doing Goechala with them next."

How to Reach
Drive from Rishikesh to Lohajung (225 km, 10–11 hours) via Karnaprayag and Tharali on NH-109. The road is scenic but slow — plan for an early 4:30 AM departure from Rishikesh or a night halt at Tharali to break the drive. Lohajung has several guesthouses where we overnight before Day 2.
Safety & Security
- Acclimatize properly — never skip rest days at altitude.
- Drink at least 4 litres of water per day above 9,000 ft.
- Tell your trek leader immediately if you feel headache, nausea, or breathlessness — early AMS signs are treatable, ignored ones are not.
- Stay close to the group; do not take shortcuts off the marked trail.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking for the entire duration of the trek.
- Keep a buffer day for travel — Himalayan roads can close without notice.
- Carry travel insurance that explicitly covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation.
