Overview
Surya Top — Uttarkashi's Quiet Panorama
Surya Top is a high meadow ridge at 11,850 ft above Uttarkashi district — one of the finest lesser-known treks in the Gangotri zone. The trail climbs through deodar and oak forest, past small Garhwali shepherd hamlets, and emerges onto a rolling meadow ridge with a 180° view of the Bandarpunch range, the Khatling Glacier peaks, and the distant white wall of the Gangotri group. Unlike the heavily trafficked treks in the Kedarkantha and Har Ki Dun areas, Surya Top sees very few commercial groups — the meadow camp often has only your batch in sight.
The route and landscape
The trailhead is 2 hours' drive from Uttarkashi — a market town and pilgrimage hub on the Gangotri highway. The trek climbs initially through deodar stands, one of the densest in the Uttarkashi division, before transitioning to banj oak and mixed shrub. The upper section passes through the Dunda shepherd meadow — a wide grassy flat used by local Gujjar and Garhwali shepherds through summer — and continues to the Surya Top ridge. The ridge is broad and grassy with good camping on the southern face and a short scramble to the highest viewpoint at the northern end.
Best season
May-June and September-October. May has the best wildflower display; September has the clearest air. July-August monsoon brings heavy rain to the Uttarkashi district and we do not run batches then.

What trekkers say
"I'd never camped in snow before. The HeyHikers team made me feel safe every single step. The summit sunrise — standing at 12,500 ft watching peaks turn gold — I cried. Not from the cold. From the beauty."

Priya Sharma
Kedarkantha, Dec 2025
"Seven lakes, each more unreal than the last. The logistics were flawless — the food at 13,000 ft was better than most restaurants I know. Our guide Farooq knew every stone on the trail. Doing Goechala with them next."

How to Reach
Drive from Rishikesh to Uttarkashi (155 km, 7–8 hours) via Tehri and Chamba on NH-94. Uttarkashi has good guesthouse options and is the resupply point. Our transport leaves Rishikesh at 5 AM, reaches Uttarkashi by early afternoon, and continues to the trailhead (2 additional hours drive) for a late-afternoon arrival. Trek starts the following morning.
Safety & Security
- Acclimatize properly — never skip rest days at altitude.
- Drink at least 4 litres of water per day above 9,000 ft.
- Tell your trek leader immediately if you feel headache, nausea, or breathlessness — early AMS signs are treatable, ignored ones are not.
- Stay close to the group; do not take shortcuts off the marked trail.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking for the entire duration of the trek.
- Keep a buffer day for travel — Himalayan roads can close without notice.
- Carry travel insurance that explicitly covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation.
