Overview
Warwan Valley — Kashmir's Wildest Traverse
The Warwan Valley trek is one of the most remote and least-trekked routes in the entire Indian Himalayas — an 8-day wilderness traverse through the Warwan valley in Jammu & Kashmir's Kishtwar district, crossing the Bhot Col (14,500 ft) from the Kashmir side into the Suru Valley of Ladakh. The Warwan valley stretches 70 km between the Pir Panjal and Great Himalayan ranges, accessed only by the Margan Top pass from the Kashmir side — a road that often closes due to snow, landslides, or security. Very few trekking companies operate this route, and the valley remains essentially as it has been for centuries: Bakarwal nomad camps, walnut groves, and glacier-fed streams with no tourist infrastructure beyond what the team carries.
The Bhot Col crossing
Day 5 is the expedition centrepiece: a glacier approach to the Bhot Col (14,500 ft) on the Great Himalayan range crest, crossing into the Suru Valley of Ladakh. The pass day involves glacier moraine, snowfield sections, and a steep descent to Haptal on the Ladakh side. Crampons and rope are used on the glacier approach. This is the defining moment of the trek — a genuine high-mountain crossing from one cultural and landscape world (lush Kashmir) into another (bare Ladakhi desert).
The cultural dimension
The Warwan Valley is inhabited by Bakarwal nomads — a pastoral Muslim community who move their flocks of sheep and goats between the Kashmir lowlands (winter) and the Warwan high pastures (summer). Meeting a Bakarwal camp — the black felt tents, the grazed horses, the dogs, the enormous flat-bread-baking operations — is one of the most vivid travel experiences in the Himalayas. On the Ladakh side, the Rangdum monastery (an isolated Tibetan Buddhist fortress on a solitary hill) provides a dramatic cultural counterpoint.
Who should do this trek
This is a difficult grade trek requiring prior high-altitude experience, excellent fitness, and comfort with remote conditions. Due to the approach road security situation in Kishtwar, we require all participants to register contact details and take out comprehensive travel insurance covering political disruption, helicopter evacuation, and trip cancellation. Maximum group size: 8 trekkers.

What trekkers say
"I'd never camped in snow before. The HeyHikers team made me feel safe every single step. The summit sunrise — standing at 12,500 ft watching peaks turn gold — I cried. Not from the cold. From the beauty."

"Seven lakes, each more unreal than the last. The logistics were flawless — the food at 13,000 ft was better than most restaurants I know. Our guide Farooq knew every stone on the trail. Doing Goechala with them next."

How to Reach
Fly to Srinagar. Drive from Srinagar via Anantnag and the Margan Top pass to Inshan in the Warwan Valley (8–9 hours one way). The Margan Top road (at ~12,000 ft) is unpaved and subject to seasonal closure — we operate this trek only in July-August when conditions are most reliable. Convoy departure from Srinagar at 4:30 AM. End of trek: drive from Rangdum via Kargil to Leh (onward flights) or Srinagar (9-hour drive) — we coordinate onward transport based on group preference.
Safety & Security
- Acclimatize properly — never skip rest days at altitude.
- Drink at least 4 litres of water per day above 9,000 ft.
- Tell your trek leader immediately if you feel headache, nausea, or breathlessness — early AMS signs are treatable, ignored ones are not.
- Stay close to the group; do not take shortcuts off the marked trail.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking for the entire duration of the trek.
- Keep a buffer day for travel — Himalayan roads can close without notice.
- Carry travel insurance that explicitly covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation.
